Clearing Blockages in the Ear
Something as simple as a small lump of natural wax lodged in the ear can cause people so much suffering. Without warning, you are plunged into silence. The sensation of pressure in your ear is irritating beyond belief. You may even feel dizzy or nauseous. Something needs to be done to relieve your suffering. And if left unchecked, an ear wax blockage can lead to pain, temporary hearing loss and tinnitus. You are not alone… Excessive or impacted cerumen affects one in 10 children, one in 20 adults, and more than one-third of older people.
But where do you turn? GPs’ surgeries and hearing clinics have waiting lists. And unfortunately, many of them no longer offer a wax removal service. NHS cutbacks have reduced spending on new equipment, staff training and the repair of ageing equipment. You’ve probably resorted to the safe home remedies; olive oil drops, dissolving drops, or other methods, to no avail. And now you don’t know where to turn.

Ear Wax Clear of Sheffield
Your ears are designed to produce wax. Called cerumen, it is a self-cleaning agent – it keeps ears healthy by trapping dirt and dust and preventing particles from getting further into the ear. However, some people regularly get blocked ears because:
- They naturally have more wax in your ears
- They have ‘hairy’ or narrow ear canals (the tubes that link the eardrum and outer ear)
- They are older – wax gets harder as you age and the skin in the inner ear can become dryer
- They wear hearing aids, or use earplugs and earphones which can push wax further down the ear canal
- Using cotton buds, your fingers, etc to clean ears can also push wax further into the ear. They can also damage your ear and should not be used

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why do I have a lot of ear wax all of a sudden?
Conditions are known as stenosis (which involves the narrowing of the ear canal), overgrowth of hair in the canal, and hypothyroidism can cause ear wax buildup. Using cotton buds, wearing hearing aids, skin ageing, and loss of elasticity can also lead to excessive earwax.
-
What happens if you don't remove ear wax?
This will depend on the severity, but in some cases, Impaction can cause pain, pressure, itching, odour, ringing of the ears, ear discharge, and sometimes hearing loss. So we do recommend seeing a specialist regarding your ear wax removal needs.
-
Should ear wax be removed?
If too much earwax builds up and starts to cause problems or you start to experience symptoms, we recommend you seek Ear Wax Clear’s services. For more information, feel free to contact us today.
-
Does ear wax mean I have an infection?
Earwax is slightly acidic, and it does have antibacterial properties; without earwax, the ear canal may become dry, soaked, and also prone to infection. But when earwax accumulates or becomes problematic, it can cause more problems, including hearing loss. For more information, contact Ear Wax Clear.
-
Does ear wax fall out on its own?
Yes, it can, so we don’t advise using your fingers or objects like cotton buds that could remove earwax. This will only push it in and worsen your situation; earwax usually falls out on its own.
